Product Overview

The Fenix PD40R V3.0 Rechargeable Flashlight is an upgrade that checks all the improvements customers have been asking for. The newly designed patented mechanical switch has raised grips for easy one-handed operation. Simply rotate the dial to access its modes—great for gloved hands. There is a hard stop before you progress to the flashing modes so you’ll always know when you are at the brightest setting without accidentally activating SOS or Strobe. Able to blast a maximum 3000 lumens now 23% farther, this flashlight is USB Type-C rechargeable. NO TAIL SWITCH allows for tail standing the light and an IP68 rating makes it durable in any conditions. Choose the Fenix PD40R V3.0 Flashlight when you need maximum brightness with a simple to use interface.

Battery Replacement

Unscrew the light body and insert the battery with the anode side (+) towards the light head, then screw the light body back on.

  1. First switch off the light and plug the USB A socket of the charging cable into an appropriate A/C powered USB plug/outlet, then connect the USB Type-C socket of the charging cable to the light.
  2. The indicator will display red while charging, and will turn to green when fully charged.
  3. Once charging is completed, be sure to unplug the charging cable and close the anti-dust cover.
  4. Only low and med outputs are available while charging.

  1. The normal charging time of the included Fenix ARB-L21-5000 V2.0 rechargeable battery is approximately 3 hours from depleted to fully charged.
  2. Recharge a stored light every four months to maintain optimum performance of the battery.

Battery level indication

When the light is switched on, the battery level indicator besides the charging port will light up to display the battery status, the indicator will stay on for 3 seconds before it goes off.

Green light on: saturated 100% - 85%

Green light flashes: sufficient 85% - 50%

Red light on: poor 50% - 25%

Red light flashes: critical 25% - 1%

Note: This feature only works with the Fenix ARB-L21-5000 V2.0 battery and the Fenix ARB-L21-4000P battery.

Intelligent Overheat Protection

The lamp will accumulate a lot of heat when used at relatively high output levels for extended periods. When the lamp reaches a temperature of 60°C or above, the lamp will automatically step down a few lumens to reduce the temperature. When the temperature drops below 60°C, it will then allow the user to select these modes again.

Low-voltage Warning

When the voltage level drops below the preset level, the lamp is programmed to downshift to a lower brightness level until Low output is reached. When this brightness level is reached (Low output), the battery level indicator blinks to remind you to recharge or replace the battery.

Note: This feature only works with the Fenix ARB-L21-5000 V2.0 battery and the Fenix ARB-L21-4000P battery.

Usage and Maintenance

  • Disassembling the sealed head can cause damage to the light and will void the warranty.
  • Fully charge the light in time to ensure normal use next time.
  • Fenix recommends using an excellent quality battery.
  • If the light will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery, or the light could be damaged by electrolyte leakage or battery explosion.
  • Unscrew the tail cap half a turn or take out the battery to prevent accidental activation during storage or transportation.
  • Long-term use can result in O-ring wear. To maintain a proper water seal, replace the ring with an approved spare.
  • Periodic cleaning of the battery contacts improves the lamp's performance as dirty contacts may cause the lamp to flicker, shine intermittently or even fail to illuminate for the following reasons:
    A: Poor battery level.
Solution: Replace or recharge the battery (Ensure the battery is inserted according to the manufacturer’s specifications).
B: The threads, PCB board contact or other contacts are dirty.
Solution: Clean the contact points with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.

If the above methods don't work, please contact your authorized distributor.

  • Turn off and lock the flashlight or remove the battery from the flashlight to prevent accidental activation when the flashlight is placed in a closed-in and flammable environment such as pockets and backpacks!
  • The LED of this flashlight is not replaceable; so the whole flashlight should be replaced when the LED reaches the end of its lifespan.

What kind of LED is used in PD40R V3.0? Does Fenix offer to replace LED?

A: A Luminus SFT70 LED with a lifespan of 50,000 hours.

Fenix does not provide LED replacement services for the time being, and users are not recommended to replace the LEDs independently, which may affect product performance and cause product damage.

What kind of battery can be used in PD40R V3.0? Why can’t the Turbo output be operated while using a Fenix ARB-L21-5000 battery?

A: Fenix ARB-L21-5000 V2.0 is recommended. Fenix ARB-L21-5000 is not compatible with PD40R V3.0 because the minimum over-current protection value of ARB-L21-5000 is 14 A while the max operating current of PD40R V3.0 is larger than 14 A. Using a Fenix ARB-L21-5000 battery may activate the protection mechanism of the battery, which will cause light to go out.

What is the color temperature of PD40R V3.0?

A: Around 6500K.

What is the operating voltage of PD40R V3.0?

A: 2.8 V~4.2 V.

What is the runtime of the Turbo output of PD40R V3.0?

A: The runtime of the Turbo output is 2 hours and 40 minutes. The light will rapidly accumulate a lot of heat when used on 3000 lumens / Turbo output. When the light reaches a temperature of a certain level, the light will automatically step down a few lumens to reduce the temperature. So the runtime of Turbo output is measured in a total of runtime including output at reduced levels due to temperature or protection mechanism in the design. The stated data are from the results produced by Fenix through its laboratory testing under the temperature of 21±3°C according to the ANSI/PLATO FL1 standard. (For specific runtime performance, refer to the runtime graph in the manual)

*According to the ANSI / PLATO FL1 standard, the battery life refers to the time from 30 seconds after the flashlight switch is turned on until the light output reaches 10% of the initial value.

Is PD40R V3.0 rechargeable? How long is the charging time?

A: Yes, PD40R V3.0 is rechargeable with a inner waterproof USB Type-C charging port. The charging time is about 3 hours.

How to prevent accidentally activate the PD40R V3.0?

A: Turn off the flashlight or remove the battery to prevent accidental activation.

Why does the PD40R V3.0 downshift to a lower mode after being used for a while and the higher mode cannot be selected?

A: There are two reasons:

1. Intelligent Overheat Protection

The flashlight will accumulate a lot of heat when used at relatively high output levels for extended periods. When the flashlight reaches a temperature of 60°C or above, the lamp will automatically step down a few lumens to reduce the temperature.

2. Low-voltage Warning

When the voltage level drops below the preset level, the flashlight is programmed to downshift to a lower brightness level until Low output is reached.

Why does the PD40R V3.0 happen to flicker?

A: The reasons that may cause the flashlight to flicker, shine intermittently or even fail to illuminate:

A: Poor battery level.

Solution: Recharge or replace the battery (Ensure battery is inserted according to the manufacturer’s specifications).

B: The contact point or contact of the battery or flashlight is dirty.

Solution: Clean the contact points with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.

If the above methods don't work, please contact the distributor.

Is the PD40R V3.0 internally waterproof?

A. Yes, the light is internally waterproof and is thus still waterproof without the port cover in place.

What should I do if the PD40R V3.0 needs repair?

1. 15-day replacement: Fenix will replace identical or equal products with documented manufacturing defects within 15 days of purchase.

2. 5-year free repair: Fenix will repair a light free of charge within 5 years (rechargeable battery: 1 year) of purchase if problems develop with normal use.

Better than expected! 5-star

I absolutely love this light. It's like a power house (best way to describe it). It feels so tough, the brightness is SICK, the beam, the throw, I love everything about it. Also the rotory switch is great! No nonsense- straight to what you want.
Also I had mine engraved and it's perfect. This has become one of my favorites ( out of many)
Thank you fenix

Better than the other Brand

I used to be proud of my Pelican light. Until I used the Fenix, now I don't even touch the Pelican.

The best flashlights hands down.

Honest user
A really nice flashlight!

Definitely a step up in quality from the cheap burner flashlights. Love the durable metal shell. The rotating light level selector feels smooth and works well. Like the harder stop before you get to the strobe level to prevent you from going there accidentally. Turbo mode is REALLY bright for a few minutes which works well for me. I was hesitant about spending this amount of money on it but am happy I did so after using it. Wife loves it! Now we’ll see how long it lasts…

Overall good just missing something

I have found this over all good for the size and everything I do really think this needs a tail switch because it will turn on in my pocket and that's the reason I'm only giving it 2 stars. also would be nice if it had a different kind of cover for the charger but haven't had any actual issues with it yet.

Overall it's been good so far though.

Hi Wade - sorry to hear the PD40R V3 is turning on in your pocket. With the rotating ring for turning the light on, this is actually the first report we have had of this happening with this light.

Great Light for All

Easier than I thought to use with one hand. Easier to use for many people who just can't understand the whole push button sequence with some lights. (Grandma haha) Good balance between hot spot and fill with a nice pattern for close and distance. Give the battery compartment 1/2 turn to prevent accidental turn on of the light during transportation. As others have said, it might be nice if Strobe was just one Hard Click to the left, but I don't use Strobe that much and it's still good to have it available on the light switch settings at the end then not at all. Engraving came out awesome. Great all around light!

Not enough items available. Only [max] left.
