This redesigned compact flashlight can now conveniently use standard AA batteries and rechargeable 14500 Li-ion batteries. Operation Instruction

The tail cap switch is the power switch (ON/OFF) and the side button switch is the mode switch.

 

ON/OFF

Tap the power switch to momentarily turn on the light, release the power switch and the light will go out. Fully press the power switch to turn on the light and lock it, another press to unlock and turn it off.

 

Output Selection

When the light is on, single-click the mode switch to cycle through Low→Mid→High→Turbo. Press and hold the mode switch for about 0.5 seconds to enter Strobe, single-click the mode switch to return back to General Mode.

 

Intelligent Memory Circuit

The flashlight memorizes the last-used brightness level in the General Mode, the next time it is turned on, it will recall that previously used General brightness level.

 

Over-heat Protection

When uses 14500 rechargeable Li-ion battery, the light will automatically downshift to 150 lumens from Turbo after working 5 minutes to prevent the light surface from overheating.

 

Low-voltage Reminder

When the voltage level drops below the preset level, the flashlight is programmed to downshift to a lower brightness level until to Low output. When this happens in Low output mode, the flashlight blinks three times every five minutes to remind you to charge the light or replace the battery. To ensure normal use, the flashlight will not turn off automatically and will work till the battery runs out completely or the over-discharge protection stops the battery from working. Note: 

  1. Each time the light is turned on, it will automatically check present battery voltage and determine corresponding circuit operating mode.
  2. The low-voltage reminder only works on 14500 rechargeable Li-ion battery.
  3. For handy operation, the light will automatically downshift the output level in cycle when the battery level is poor.

Battery Replacement

Unscrew the light head to insert the battery with the anode side (+) toward the light's head, then screw the light head back on.

 

Usage and Maintenance

  • Disassembling the sealed head can cause damage to the light and will void the warranty.
  • Fenix recommends using excellent quality battery. If the flashlight will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery, or the flashlight could be damaged by electrolyte leakage or battery explosion.
  • Unscrew the light body one-half turn or take out the battery to prevent accidental activation during storage or transportation.
  • Long-term use can result in O-ring wear. To maintain a proper water seal, replace the ring with an approved spare.
  • Periodic cleaning of the battery contacts improves the flashlight's performance as dirty contacts may cause the flashlight to flicker, shine intermittently or even fail to illuminate for the following reasons: 
    Reason A: The batteries need replacing. 
    Solution: Replace batteries (Please confirm the correct installation of anode and cathode). 
    Reason B: The threads, PCB boards contact or other contacts are dirty. 
    Solution: Clean the contact points with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.

Tiny tank! Outstanding service!

I've had this flashlight since gen.1, and just love how versatile it is.

Sadly, alkaline batteries leak, and the tail cap/switch was a salty, crusty toast.

Luckily, Fenix has an actual-factual phone number with Americans manning the lines. Laura was super helpful in getting me upgraded to a new model - and helped me find the replacement part for my old one.

I love this brand, I love their service, and I wouldn't recommend any other company to my friends/ family for quality flashlights.

My light collection keeps growing, and they all bear the mark of Fenix.

Please Fenix - don't ever change!

On my sixth

This light is absolutely used and abused daily as the most used tool as a mechanic.

There are three absolutely huge selling points on this flashlight for me:

1. The small size - due to the narrowing spaces of cars a headlamp won't work for me, and I have to hold it in my lips to see what I'm doing. This doesn't work with anything larger than AA/14500 form factor.

2. The neutral white color temperature - Tracing colored wires on a vehicle requires a light with high color rendering index, especially if the wire colors are faded. I tried switching to a more modern E35, but its large size and extremely unpleasant green tint to the light has caused it to be buried somewhere deep inside my toolbox. I bought a second E35 thinking the green tint was an error, but no, it is in the same dark shadowy nook of my box, never to see the light of day again.

3. Mode memory - When you select a mode on the flashlight and turn it off, it will return to that mode and be of the last brightness you used assuming the battery voltage is present. Note that alkalines start with a voltage of 1.5V versus a NiMH's voltage of 1.2V, so lifetime can be noticeably higher with an alkaline versus a rechargeable. Fenix made an LD02 with neutral white, but having to toggle it to a reasonable brightness every time you turned it on made me just plain throw it away.

I've been through five so far - they tend to last only about a year before automatic transmission fluid exposure eats through the rubber membrane on either the side or mode select button. My sixth currently has a split membrane despite my best efforts. The flashlight is dropped onto concrete at least 3 times weekly - mostly from the height of my breast pocket (about 5 feet) and sometimes while standing on a ladder (10ft drop). It is usually found soaked in automotive fluids like engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, brake clean, etc. The one fluid I try to avoid around it is automatic transmission fluid (ATF) because accidental exposure will cause the button membranes to split, then the button mechanism will catch debris and no longer be operable. This has caused the death of all of my LD12s.

The battery life on NiMH rechargeables is acceptable - seeing as how this light is used about 5 hours per day on high and is cycled approx. 200 times per day, I go through two NiMH Eneloops per day. So I keep a charger bay full of them. If you do go with Eneloops, do not buy the Eneloop Pros. Their reduced number of charging cycles absolutely destroys their value.

Neutral white LEDs are inherently more inefficient than cool white ones due to technological limitations, so I can't ask Fenix to improve runtime or regular-use brightness on this flashlight. The only thing I can ask is to please, please, please increase resistance against incidental automatic transmission fluid exposure.

Tough light!

I've had this light for many years now. Carried at work, dropped and run through the wash and dryer way too many times to count. This light has never let me down!
