Battery Replacement

Unscrew the tail cap and insert the battery following the polarity marks, then screw the cap back on.

Charging

  1. Switch off the light and open the USB cap to reveal the USB Type-C charging port and plug the USB A socket of the charging cable into an electrical outlet, then connect the USB Type-C socket of the charging cable to the light.
  2. The indicator will display red while charging and will turn green when fully charged.
  3. Once charging is completed, be sure to tighten the USB cap to maintain the dustproof and waterproof ability.

Note:

  1. The normal charging time of the included Fenix ARB-L18-2600 is approximately 2 hours from depletion to full charging.
  2. Recharge a stored light every four months to maintain the optimum performance of the battery.
  3. The Low/Med mode is available while charging, but the charging time will be prolonged.

Note: This only works with Fenix ARB-L18 Series 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery.

Battery Level Indication

Single click the switch when the light is switched off, the indicator will indicate the battery level and will last for 3 seconds.

  • Green light on: saturated 100% - 85%
  • Green light flashes: sufficient 85% - 50%
  • Red light on: poor 50% - 25%
  • Red light flashes: critical 25% - 1%

Note: This only works with Fenix ARB-L18 Series 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery.

Intelligent Overheat Protection

The light will accumulate a lot of heat when used at relatively high modes for extended periods. When the light reaches a temperature of 60°C or above, the light will automatically step down a few lumens to reduce the temperature. When the temperature drops below 60°C, it will then allow the user to reselect the modes.

Low-voltage Warning

When the voltage level drops below the preset level, the bicycle light is programmed to downshift to a lower brightness level until Low mode is reached. When this happens in Low mode, the battery level indicator constantly blinks red to remind you to recharge or replace the battery.

Note: This only works with Fenix ARB-L18 Series 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery.

Usage and Maintenance

  • Disassembling the sealed head can cause damage to the light and will void the warranty.
  • Fenix recommends using only a high-quality protected battery.
  • If the light will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery for proper storage.
  • Unscrew the tail cap or remove the battery to prevent accidental activation during storage or transportation.
  • Long-term use can result in O-ring wear. To maintain a proper water seal, replace the ring with an approved spare.
  • Periodic cleaning of the battery contacts improves the light's performance as dirty contacts may cause the light to flicker, shine intermittently or even fail to illuminate for the following reasons:
    A: Poor battery level.
Solution: Recharge or replace the battery.
B: The contact or contact point of the battery or bicycle light is dirty.
Solution: Clean the contact points with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.

If the above methods don't work, please contact your authorized distributor.

Warning

  • Do place this light out of the reach of children!
  • Do NOT shine the light directly into the eyes of anyone!
  • Do NOT shine flammable objects at close range, to avoid burning objects or causing danger due to high temperature!
  • Do NOT use the light in inappropriate ways such as biting in the mouth, to avoid personal injury or life threats when the light or internal battery fails!
  • This light will accumulate a lot of heat while working, resulting in a high temperature of the flashlight shell. Pay attention to safe use to avoid scalding.
  • Turn off and lock the light or remove the battery from the light to prevent accidental activation when the light is placed in a closed and flammable environment such as pockets and backpacks!
  • The LED of this flashlight is not replaceable; so the whole light should be replaced when the LED reaches the end of its life.

Doesn’t seem the battery life is any better than light & motion lights, plus L&M appear to be a stronger more direct light

5 years and still going strong

It's 2023. I purchased a previous version of the BC21R five years ago in 2018. It's the most dependable part of my bike. It's survived 3 crashes and 2 drops and is still on the original 18650 battery.

I ride on roads during the day and always use the light in flash mode (15-20 hours a week, 2-4 hour rides) I ride before sunrise and use the light primarily in medium mode but switch to high mode when it's darker. (20-40 hours a year) Flashing and high mode slightly degrade my night vision.

I've never measured but I'm guessing I get 5-9 hours of life on flash mode with a 5 year old 18650 battery. 95% dry roads.

Only nit... At some point, bike mount lost some grip on handlebars. After riding on rough roads or hitting a pothole, I sometimes have to adjust it up/down a little.

Why a review after 5 years? I went to recharge my light and realized that it may outlast my bike.

Runtime/output table is misleading

Looking at the graph above, stated outputs in the table are not for the full duration of the listed runtimes. The light is kind of useless to me if the 400lumens output is only sustained for 2 hours..especially with the spread of this light. If it had a more bike specific hotspot, it could work, but that is not the case.. Fenix still has some work to do here.

The runtimes in the ANSI chart are the runtime including the drop downs for overheat protection and to help extend the battery life. The graph shows you how long you can expect at each level and what it will drop down to for approximately how long before the battery will be out. The slight drop downs in lumen level help to preserve the battery as opposed to having the output remain the same level and then the light suddenly dies because the battery has been depleted.

Good light meh battery

As others have noted, the advertised run times are absolute fantasy. My experience has been about 15 hours in the flash mode.

The battery indicator goes from green to red without pausing on yellow, so no reliable indication of how much juice is left.

GREAT mount and form factor.

Hi John - thanks for your review. While the factory does not provide us with a runtime for the flash mode, we find that generally speaking, it has been around twice as long as the runtime for the 'non-flashing' mode with the same lumen level. For the BC21R V3, the flash mode is 400 lumens, thus the runtime when the light is just ON at 400 lumens is 6 hrs. 30 minutes. Based on the estimated runtime that flash mode is about twice that, our best guess for the flash mode run time would be 13 hours, or about 2 hours less than what you are getting from flash per your review. I'm not sure if you are having a problem with one of the other modes and the listed runtime? If so, feel free to reach out to our warranty department. I have listed their info below.

As for the battery indicator, there is no yellow light regarding the battery. The following is from the instructions for the battery indicator:

Battery Level Indication

Single click the switch when the light is switched off, the indicator will indicate the battery level and will last for 3 seconds.

Green light on: saturated 100% - 85%
Green light flashes: sufficient 85% - 50%
Red light on: poor 50% - 25%
Red light flashes: critical 25% - 1%

It's an ok light if you use it as at High Setting, Turbo is basically useless.

First, I wanted to send this back because it will not fit my 35mm bar unless I removed both rubber pads. Doing that exposes a rivet that gouges your bars. I was told I would have to get an RMA to return this. To skip the hassle, I gave it to my son who has a 31.8mm bars and this fits fine on his bike. So we did our first night ride and Turbo would only stay on for 20 minutes. Then it would reduce. You could turn it back up only to reduce again. I tested this at home with fresh battery and got more of the same. So just get used to your light dimming to less than half it's output in the middle of a ride with now warning. Last, its kinda heavy for what it is. It's acceptable weight for a 1200 lumen 2 hour light, but it's only reliable as a 400 lumen light. As a 400 lumen light, it's too heavy. I like Fenix products and I use their batteries exclusively in my other lights. I think they make some awesome products, but this light was a real disappointment.

Hi Erik - Sorry to hear you are disappointed in this light. Yes, we do require an RMA to return a product, which is a simple procedure with our warranty team. A quick phone call or email to warranty and they get you in the system and email the RMA info to you. That way we know what's coming in, and why.

As for the runtime on Turbo, it will drop down in lumens, per the runtime chart, to protect the light from overheating.
