Fenix HP30R rechargeable headlamp employs power and versatility in rare form and design. The power comes in two forms.  First, it is powered by two 18650 rechargeable batteries that allow for convenient extended runtimes in an easy to recharge case that has the unique ability to also charge your other USB rechargeable devices.   The other “power” component comes from the sheer brute strength of it’s powerful beam.  The 3 unique LED’s can all be used at once to disperse an amazing 1750 Lumens that reaches over 650 feet (200 meters) showing you items in the distance that few would imagine.

The versatility of this headlamp begins with the belt-worn (or backpack) battery case that allows for lightweight and comfortable design on the head. The rechargeable micro USB port in the battery case even allows you to utilize it as a power bank in those moments your cell phone might need a little extra charge. The versatility continues with 4 levels of spotlight and 4 levels of soft floodlight.  The unique ability to utilize both flood and spot levels at once provide you 16 levels of adaptable light with runtimes lasting as long as 400 hours. Although the HP30R can be life saving tool to search and rescue professionals; it’s easy to use and affordability make it ideal for adventurists at all levels.

Lighting Mode

(Factory default is “High” upon first use; thereafter intelligent memory circuit is activated)

Spotlight switch: press and hold the switch for 0.5 seconds to turn ON/OFF the spotlight. Click to cycle through High→Turbo→Low→Med.

Floodlight switch: press and hold the switch for 0.5 seconds to turn ON/OFF the floodlight. Click to cycle the lamp through High→Turbo→Low→Med.

Note: The spot- and floodlights are controlled by separate switches.

Intelligent Memory Circuit

The headlamp memorizes the last brightness level used. When next turned on, the previously used brightness level is recalled.

SOS Mode

In any state, press and hold the floodlight switch for 1.2 seconds to enter SOS mode. Click to return to previous state. The SOS output is the same as the floodlight Med level.

Intelligent Overheat Protection

The headlamp will accumulate a lot of heat when high output levels are used. To avoid high surface temperature:

  1. The output will automatically be downshifted when the lamp reaches a temperature of 65℃;
  2. When the temperature is reduced, the output will gradually return to previously used output level.

Battery Level Indication (Only works on 18650 battery)

Single click the indication switch to check the battery level. Indication will last for 5 seconds:

  • Four constantly on: more than 80%
  • Three constantly on: 60%-80%
  • Two constantly on: 40%-60%
  • One constantly on: 20%-40%
  • One flashes: lower than 20%, charge the headlamp as soon as possible

Charging (Only works on 18650 battery)

  1. Open the anti-dust cover on the battery case. Plug the Micro USB terminal of the charging cable into the Micro USB port in the battery case, and the USB terminal of the charging cable into any USB power supply.
  2. The indicator lights start flashing to indicate charging. The indicator lights turn constantly on when the battery is fully charged. The normal charging time is about 8 hours for 2 batteries and the recommended adaptor is 5V/2A. If only one battery is being charged the indicators will not show, and the charging time will be about 4 hours.

Power Bank Function

Open the anti-dust cover on the battery case. Connect the device to be charged, to the battery case with the charging cable. Press and hold the indication switch for 3 seconds to start charging the external device. The four indicator lights will start flashing to indicate charging. Remove the charging cable once charging is completed. Charging can be resumed if disconnection does not exceed 5 seconds.

  1. Once charging is completed, be sure to remove the charging cable and replace the anti-dust cover to retain water and dust resistance.
  2. A short circuit can occur if a metal object touches any part of the USB or micro USB terminals. If this happens, remove the metal object to resume normal operation. If a short circuit is caused by a metal object touching the male terminal of the connecting cable with the headlamp, reinsert or recharge the battery to resume normal operation.

Battery Replacement

Unscrew the locking nuts to insert the battery according to the polarity markings, and then screw the locking nuts back in.

Headlamp Strap Assembly

  1. Attach the headband to the headlamp as shown, by first sliding the band down to the bottom of the slots. Then hook the top edge under the top slot.
  2. Adjust the headband by sliding the buckle to required length.
  3. Use the clips and buckles provided to retain the headlamp cable in the headband or top headband mount.
  4. Connect the battery case male terminal to the headlamp cable female terminal, and attach the battery case to the belt.

Usage and Maintenance

  • Disassembling the sealed head can cause damage to the headlamp and will void the warranty.
  • Fenix strongly recommends using quality disposable or rechargeable Lithium battery.
  • Long-term use can result in O-ring wear. To maintain a proper water seal, replace the ring with an approved spare.
  • Periodic cleaning of the battery contacts improves the lamp’s performance as dirty contacts may cause the lamp to flicker, shine intermittently or even fail to illuminate for the following reasons:
    A: The batteries need replacing.
Solution: Replace batteries (Ensure batteries are inserted according to the manufacturer’s specifications).
B: The threads, PCB board contact or other contacts are dirty.
Solution: Clean the contact points with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.

If the above methods don’t work, please contact your authorized distributor.

The headlamp is a high-intensity lighting device capable of causing eye damage to the user or others. Avoid shining the light directly into anyone’s eyes.

The headlamp will accumulate a lot of heat after working in highest mode for an extended period of time. Do not touch any metal part of the lamp head to prevent scalding.

    Love the long burn time

  2. James K Doyle III

I have owned this headlamp for roughly two years and without a doubt if you require a headlamp you need to wear for extended periods of time and is capable of discharging extremely powerful lumens then this is what your looking for! I was initially not really pleased with the battery pack being separated and designed with a belt clip but it has really grown on me. I have an older Fenix IPX-6 headlamp with the battery pack on the back but I was burning through 4 rechargeable AA batteries in one night, the HP30R utilizing the larger 2 x 21700 batteries allows considerable more runtime in addition to taking that bulky weight off the back of my head. This headlamp is so bright that I typically only require running the left flood LED on the second lowest setting but when my dog took off across an acre wide field in the middle of the night I was able to turn on the right side spot beam and located him immediately.

Great light battery life is awesome and it’s going to come in handy for work this winter!

  4. Zeng Sheng Liu (verified owner)

The light itself is good. It is very bright and light (due to a separate module for the battery). The reason for -1 star is because of of the batteries it comes with does not hold charge after 1 week and require recharging.

    • Dianne

I will have warranty reach out to you to see if they aren’t lasting as long as the runtime chart. Depending on what level you are using it at, and for how many hours, it’s possible that you need to recharge the batteries after a week of use.

  5. Sonni D. (verified owner)

It has stopped coming on all of a sudden but it was/is a great light other than that

    • Dianne

Someone from warranty will contact you to trouble shoot on that.

    Pricey but worth the cost!!!

  7. Charles S. (verified owner)

Nice powerful light. Much brighter than the $35 off-market headlamp that claimed to have higher lumens. Good bettery life.

  17. Mark (verified owner)

Epic headlamp. I use it for skiing at night, but you could probably land a plane with it. Definitely could use it if your car headlights are out. The dual beam control is perfect for skiing; the controls are intuitive and easy to use with gloves. The cord is just long enough to clip the battery to my pants, chest carrier would be nice. Would certainly recommend to anyone who need to a lot of light (bicycling, skiing, etc.)

  18. Ryan Taylor

I got this light as a gift, and it’s been with me everywhere.
The spotlight is a real monster,it can light things up half a kilometer away almost, and that floodlight is insanity, strong enough to light up a baseball field easily. Inside a cave or dark place, its turns it into daytime like a portable sun.
The price is great as well compared to lights of equal output. Really good.
The only issue with it is the cord length. As a 6 foot man the cord barely reaches my belt or side jacket pocket without going taut and unplugging itself at every bend. I need to keep it in a breast pocket, not the most comfortable of places for the size of batteries.
A solution for this issue would be to make an additional length of cord,16 to 24 inches, that can easily plug into the existing cord to lengthen it.
It would be the greatest thing since sliced bread than.

    • Dianne

Thanks for the input Ryan – I’ll make that suggestion to the Factory about an option for an extension.

    great light

  20. Barry (verified owner)

Bought light for hunting in Georgia swamp land. Normally walk 500 yards to stand before daylight. Swamp has wild hogs and venomous snakes. The bright white lights gives a sense of security as I travel through the swamp. I normally use the flood light and have easy access to spotlight button in case I need it. Best feature it’s hands free other than lighting adjustments. Disadvantage the unit does heat up and is hot to the touch. The USB charge is slow, I bought a separate Fenix dual charger. The cord and belt clip can be a little cumbersome with backpack and gun.

  21. Anonymous (verified owner)

Very good so far. Light level choices are fantastic. Cord is thick, which can make it slightly difficult to work with, but, hopefully, the thicker cord means it will last longer.

  22. Cedric (verified owner)

Light is great. Happy with purchase. Highly recommend

  24. M C. (verified owner)

Fantastic headlamp with great battery life for the high output. Used it biking in the pitch black and even at high speeds the spread and throw of the headlamp was wonderful and never had to worry about outrunning my light. Great product

  25. Jacob abbott (verified owner)

Very durable and bright. Best headlamp ive ever bought!

  26. Nels Peterson (verified owner)

An amazing headlamp for mountaineering during moonless nights!

  27. Derek Bonpietro (verified owner)

Build quality and performance is reflected in the purchase price. The unit is rugged and throws an unbelievable amount of light in both flood and spot. Literally a night and day difference to brand name headlamps. I have to remind myself not to look at passing vehicles or people when on turbo mode as to not blind them.

  28. ERIC LEE (verified owner)

    Nice equipment

  29. Ivan

Initially worked great. Very bright, comfortable to wear in tough conditions (winter). However, after about 4 months it started glitching. From time to time, the battery level indicator started turning on by itself and was on till completely discharging the battery, even with disconnecting the light. Then it started to shut down when battery level went below 70% (3.8V). Then it stopped working completely. I looked inside, there were no corrosion or disconnected wires/parts, so the design must be the issue.

I think if you are looking for a reliable light for use in a serious conditions (multiday winter or mountaineering expeditions) then you should pick the light without wires and one solid unit, with a minimum set of “features”, such as HL60R. If you will further seal usb port with marine silicone or epoxy and add a protective ring around on/off switch, you will get a quite reliable device.

    • Dianne

Ivan – that should not have happened. Someone from warranty will reach out to you to see if they can help you out with that.

  32. richard lynn (verified owner)

Brightest and burn time are great, but the power cord is to short for caving.

  33. David Eizinger (verified owner)

I really like this light. Well balanced, easy to put on/take off. Both beams provide amazing light. I wish you could turn on both the spot and area light simultaneously.
I had a problem with my initial order and the Warrantee folks were amazing. Made the process very easy. Thank you.

  35. Donald Leopard (verified owner)

It works great, was a little concerned that the battery would pull my shorts down but not so, light enough to hook right on the waist band of my shorts

  36. Josh (verified owner)

Best light I’ve ever owned. I’m a farmer and use it every day.

  37. Jonathan T. (verified owner)

Really disappointed with it. Cord is to short to reach my pocket, the cord I find is obnoxious annoying.
It is very bright and great quality product

  38. Lehua (verified owner)

This is the best headlamp I ever owned.

  39. Larry Fortier (verified owner)

Very well-built and bright headlamp. I wanted to wait to leave a review until I used it in one of our sled dog races. This past weekend I ran a 102 mile race using this headlamp and it was amazing. I did the whole race only using the second brightness setting and it was more than enough to navigate the trail. The battery lasts a very long time. Also, the customer service at Fenix was very helpful. When placing the order, I messed up and didn’t enter a coupon code to get the free 2-day shipping and 20% discount. After contacting customer service, they applied the discount and upgraded my shipping. Great product and great company.

  40. Curtis Schmalz (verified owner)

The best headband flashlight I have have ever owned. It is very bright.

  41. Robert (verified owner)

Having the extra light availability is quite reassuring. We live remote and on occasion had to help people during severe storms. Otherwise, my normal use is on lowest power for walks in the woods at night.

  42. paul d. (verified owner)

I walk my dogs every morning in the dark and this headlamp lights up my whole field of vision I really like the flood light feature to see everything from both sides and the spotlight let’s me see hundreds of feet ahead
    All in all great headlamp

  47. Anonymous (verified owner)

Great light for hands free use. Verrrry happy with purchase and like the workmanship in products I’ve purchased.

  48. Riley (verified owner)

Love this headlamp for caving. It’s like turning the lights on underground! I also appreciate that the battery pack is detachable, will sometimes clip it to my hip in caves with tight squeezes. Bought this on the recommendation of a friend, and I would recommend several times over.

  49. Evan M. (verified owner)

Holy crap bright. Love it to death. very lightweight feel on head. The cord could be longer, but it fits all of my jackets, if I’m not wearing a jacket the cord is not long enough to reach my belt. All types of 18650’s are capable of working in this(protected, flat top and button top).

  50. Paul Bailey (verified owner)

Lights up the West side of North Tabletop Mesa; deer and all!

  51. Tom G. (verified owner)

The HP30R looks like it will become my” go to” light for most night time lighting needs.

  52. Mel Potter (verified owner)

I use this quite a bit, I like being able to have the option to use the battery case as a power bank as well, really neat. Use this for the flood, rarely the spotlight.

  53. arien e. (verified owner)

So far pleased with my purchase. I am a house painter and use this light on interiors of new construction. Very bright and nice neutral white light makes it easy to apply paint and varnish on doors and trim with out the hassle of dragging extension cords and halogen work lights around the job site. I like the fact that it uses rechargeable 18650 batteries as I also use an electronic cigarette which uses the same batteries, much preferred over having to buy aa batteries all the time The batterie box and belt clip are robust and the batterie power level indicator lights come in handy. I wanted the extended run time and power that dual 18650″s can provide and this headlamp is kind of unique in this way. overall, well made, powerful and arrived in a nice box. I also appreciate the fact that fenix puts out warnings about cheaply made copies of their products and how to avoid them. would have given it a five if not for the power cord, which is very stiff and slightly cumbersome to adjust properly to the clip on the back of the headband. Also the cord is on the short side and when bending down or kneeling sometimes pulls the batterie box out of the belt clip.

  54. Assaf U,

This is probably the best headlamp you could buy at the moment,
Great light, very comfortable and light on the head and great functions.
    However, it has few cons:
    1. The battery pack metal clip slides too easily IMHO, and the cord also needs securing.
    2. It gets hot, and really fast. I would actually think twice before putting it on my head for long time on its max output,
    3. The cord is too stiff and not very comfortable when worn behind the back.

  55. JULIO CINTRON (verified owner)

The best one I have purchased

  56. Dallas Grant (verified owner)

I love this head lamp. I locate underground utility lines and often am sent out to emergencies in the middle of the night. Last year I purchased one the sounded good, but it was a rip off.. This one actually does as it claims. The battery lasts for hours, it is actually very water resistant, it charges fairly quickly, and it is so bright that even being alone on a deserted road on a new moon night that I can see everything… Oh, and the fact that Battery pack is on my belt makes it so it is so light on my head. I also love I can wear it with or without a hard hat easily.

  57. Clinton S. (verified owner)

Took this caving and is was by far and away the brightest light in the cave and also lasted the longest

  58. tom

I have two of the HP30 headlamps along with six other Fenix lamps that use the 18650 battery. The HP30 is my go-to lamp for auto and aircraft repair and inspection because the battery life is so long and reliable, and having it on my head leaves my hands free. The battery life outlasts any other headlamp for a comparable light output, (I have the predecessor HP25 that uses four AA batteries, which was an expensive habit to feed.) and the ability to select flood or spot helps a lot with various situations. I also don’t worry about running the batteries to auto-shutoff because it costs nothing to recharge them. I put the battery pack in a pocket and run the cord under a shirt or jacket so I don’t snag it on something.

One con is the cord disconnect at the battery pack. If it breaks internal contact, even for an instant, it shuts the light off. I have to press the lamp buttons again to turn the light back on. I understand that having a breakway feature is a good thing, but bumping the connector and ending up in total darkness sucks. I no longer use the HP30 for motorcycle or bicycle riding for that reason.

  59. David (verified owner)

I have had this light for a month now and I mostly love it. The light is so bright and I love the fact that the battery lasts for a long time and is rechargeable. There are a few negative things about this light: The light itself gets very hot after a while and it sometimes flashes for no reason (I thought that LED does not get so hot?). The cord that connects the light to the battery is heavy duty and not very flexible. The connector for the cord also can disconnect as I move about (screw or latch type would be better). Overall, I love it but wishing that the shortcomings can be fixed for my light.

  60. Harold Holdren

I’ve had this light for some time, and it never disappoints. It’s as versatile as it is powerful . The flood is amazing! I can use this light to charge my other rechargeable Fenix lights. Runtime is great, color rendition is perfect!

very good, i love Floodlight, thx fenix
