Battery Charging

  • Micro USB port is the charging port (Pic 1). Connect to the power supply and insert the battery, the LCD screen will display the charging status and battery level. And the the battery icon on the screen will blink for 8 seconds, corresponding charging current can be selected within the 8 seconds by single clicking the A or B button.
  • The A channel is for common charging, and B channel is for fast charging, the rated charging current of both channels is 1.0A.
  • Li-ion battery – when A&B channels or only A channel is inserted with battery: 0.5A and 1.0A can be selected by single clicking corresponding button; when only B channel is inserted with battery: 0.5A, 1.0A and 2.0A can be selected by single clicking B button.
  • Ni-MH/Ni-Cd battery – 0.5A and 1.0A can be selected for A or B channel by single clicking corresponding button.
  • A and B channels work independently due to the independent working circuits, while subtle difference exists. It is normal for ongoing charging within a short time if two fully-charged batteries exchange the channel.

  1. It is normal for the battery temperature to be below 55°C during charging, but due to the high charging current, the battery may heat, so be careful of scalding.
  2. There will be no trickle charging if Li-ion battery is fully charged to prevent overcharging.
  3. There will be trickle charging of 3-5mA of Ni-MH/Ni-Cd battery to ensure it is fully charged.

Battery Discharging

  • B channel with inserted battery features discharging function, while A channel doesn’t.
  • After the rechargeable battery is inserted in B channel, connect the USB port of the charging device to the port of the charger’s to start discharging. The maximum discharging current is 2A.
  • When discharging, press and hold the button over 2 seconds, the “USB 5V” icon on the LCD display will continue to flash. At this time, the charger unlocks the small current (about 100mA) discharging mode, press the button again over 2 seconds, the “USB 5V” icon is always on and the small current discharging mode is limited.
  • The LCD screen will display the current battery level and voltage during the discharging process.
  • This charger only works with Li-ion battery discharging. When it is charging a battery, the discharging function will be locked. When charging is stopped, the USB discharging function is unlocked and can be used for external devices.

LCD Screen Display

  • The LCD screen will display for 2 seconds after connecting to the power supply. (Pic2)
  • If there is no battery in the channel, 2 seconds later, the LCD screen will only display the battery symbol, and then the screen will go out after 30 seconds. Single click any button, the screen will be lit up with the battery symbol displayed.
  • The battery type, capacity and charging status will be displayed after battery insertion. Single click the corresponding button to select charging current during the 8 seconds with the battery symbol displayed. Then single click the button – the screen will cycle through charging current (mA)→battery voltage (V)→charging capacity (mAh)→charging time (T). Press and hold the button over 2 seconds to turn off the LCD screen. Single clicking the button again will turn on the LCD screen.

Battery level will be displayed as follows by the battery status bar:
One flashing, four off: less than 20%
One bar constant-on, one flashing, three off: 21% – 40%
Two bars constant-on, one flashing, two off: 41% – 60%
Three bars constant-on, one flashing, one off: 61%- 80%

  1. Julio V. (verified owner)

The Fenix-ARE-D2 makes keeping your Ni-MH, Li-ion, or Ni-Cads topped off and ready to go quick and simple. The LED display is backlit and allows you to select your charging rate (.5, 1.0 or 2.0, depending on the battery type you use). The unit can also be used to charge your cell phone in a pinch if needed via the USB port. Small unit is easy to carry in your bugout bag. Easy to use with simple instructions that have you up and running in no time. The auto shut off Display feature saves power when not in use. The voltage selector buttons make selecting charge settings and viewing battery voltage easy. A must-have if you need a charger that can slow or fast charge many of those cells you use in your flashlights.

Nice small battery charger which has a clear read-out and does it’s job.

  3. Dan (verified owner)

    Very nice charger

  4. Robert (verified owner)

  6. Nathan (verified owner)

  7. Jacob (verified owner)

Seem to be a fast charger I like the digital display

  8. Brian (verified owner)

Great for charging 16340 and 18650 batteries, and also size AA and AAA and C rechargeables. The management circuitry is intelligent enough to sense the battery composition and adjust automatically.

The display gives you a good reading on how close to full the battery is, and you can select the charge rate based on your needs. Each charging bay has a fully independent display and mode setting.

Put in a charged battery or two and connect a cell phone or small tablet to the standard USB-A port, and this unit will charge the device (as much as the capacity of the installed batteries will allow).

  14. Anthony Bautista (verified owner)

When charging two 18650 or two 21700 batteries at once it seems to work fine. When charging a mixture of AA and 18650 batteries the charge level jumped from partially charged to 100%. Other than this, it works for what I need it for. I’ll be troubleshooting, I may need to use a more powerful power supply.

  24. Justin Johnson (verified owner)

A lot of the newer Fenix lights are utilizing the newest technology like the 21700 batteries. The majority of the batteries I own are 18650 and up until I purchased this (ARE-D2 charger) I could only charge the 18650 and smaller. This charger, the ARE-D2, will also charge the 21700 batteries and a lot of other sizes too like 10440, 14500, 16340, 18650, 21700, 26650 Ni-MH or Ni-Cd batteries: AA, AAA, C. It’s fast to charge and even has a lot of great information on the screen about the charge cycle. I bought the two-bay version (charge 2 batteries at the same time) but would love to see them make a four-bay version for those of us who have hundreds of batteries to charge. One of the greatest features of this charger, in my opinion, is the ability to use it as a power bank. For instance, I can put 1 to 2 batteries in the charger and now plug my external device into the charger to be charged by the batteries. It’s perfect for those who go hiking or camping and want to carry the least amount of weight in their pack. There would no longer be a need to carry an external battery bank because this charger acts like one as long as you have batteries to feed it. Great work on this one Fenix. 100% top-shelf equipment!
